What Does it Mean to Unsettle?

To Unsettle: To never settle for work you don't love. To shake up your life in a positive way. To disquiet yourself from living a life that is expected of you rather than the one you want to live. To make an impact through your work and gain flexibility and freedom in the process.

 What Are Unsettlers?

You may see me or members of the Unsettle community using the word “Unsettlers” to refer to a group of people in blog posts, emails, courses and reports.

Unsettlers are a group of people who are unsettling from the status quo, challenging career and work norms and building their dreams. When I refer to Unsettlers, I typically mean members of the Unsettle community. Become an Unsettler (for free, of course) here.

how to build a dream business

  1. Identify Your Skills and Interests: So you can find a hole in the world in the shape of you and fill it.
  2. The Idea: You can't start something if you don't know what to start. Narrow down on an idea and validate it.
  3. Take Action: Without action, you're not Unsettling. You're just wasting time. Here's where to start.
  4. Build with passion: If you're not willing to get up at 4:30 AM to work on your dream before your 9-5, you probably picked the wrong idea.
  5. Make Money, Change the World and Do What You Love: When you're doing what you love, serving your audience and filling a need, you're changing the world. The best part is, you're paid to do it!

You will come into this at different stages. Some of you will be pre-Stage 1. Some of you will be sitting in Stage 4. Regardless of your stage, Unsettle will provide you with the community and support to take it to the next level.

bluehost best hostingWeb Hosting: When you get to the action stage, the first thing you need to do is to start a website. I highly recommend Bluehost for your hosting. It's easy to use, simple to set up and you don't have to be a techie to understand how it works. Bluehost gives you a free domain when you register new hosting, so you don't have to deal with buying your domain through another company and setting up the domain nameservers. Click here to get hosting for $3.95/month and snag a free domain.

WPWordPress: There are quite a few blogging and website platforms out there. Squarespace, WordPress, Tumblr, Blogger, not to mention a million others. But the best one, hands down, is WordPress. WordPress is used by most websites (Unsettle is powered by WordPress) and is easy to use, ultra-functional and 100% free (it's an open-source software). When you get set up with hosting, the first thing you need to do is load WordPress. Here are instructions.

99 designsThemes: You need your site to look good, but you don't want to spend thousands on a web design (at least at first!). So try using a pre-made theme – either free (find in WordPress) or paid. I use Jeff Goins' Tribe Theme. You can also use a website like ThemeForest to find one. For a custom design, I'd use 99 Designs, which is used by people like Tim Ferriss for logos, websites, and even book covers in a really unique way: you submit your job, and you get dozens of submissions from designers, who you can then choose from. Click here to check out 99 Designs.

powered by aweberBuild an Email List: Your site needs an email list. Your list helps you tap into, communicate with, and build a deeper connection with your audience, allowing you to reach even more people. It makes making money far easier. It's the ultimate marketing platform. I use Aweber. It's easy to use and set up.  Click here to sign up for Aweber and get your first month for free.

leadpages-logo-150x150Leadpages: For advanced Unsettlers who have a bit of money to invest and want to take it to the next level.  I use this for all of my landing pages (example). I love Leadpages. It's made my life easier, and has saved me at least 100 hours in the past 2 months (plus has enabled me to capture far more emails). With Leadpages, you can create professional, high-converting landing pages to offer opt-in offers and capture emails. It integrates with Aweber and WordPress. It's a bit pricey, but it's definitely worth it.Click here to sign up for Leadpages.
